🎓 Articulate 360: Build Interactive E-Learning with Rise & Storyline

Articulate 360 is the toolkit behind a huge share of the world's online training — from slick, responsive courses that read beautifully on a phone to deeply interactive simulations that respond to a learner's every click. This free, hands-on course takes you from a blank screen to a published, trackable course. You'll get an early win building in Rise 360, then go deep with the real engine of interactivity in Storyline 360 — states, triggers, and variables — and finish by publishing to a real LMS. Honest about the subscription, and built entirely on skills you can practice during the free trial.

🧭 Articulate 360 in 60 Seconds

Articulate 360 is a subscription suite for building e-learning — the interactive online courses you take for onboarding, compliance, software training, and school. It's two authoring tools plus a set of supporting apps. Three ideas make the whole thing click:

  • Rise 360 is the fast lane. It runs in your browser and builds courses out of ready-made blocks — text, images, quizzes, and interactions you assemble like Lego. Courses come out responsive (great on any screen) with almost no fuss. It's the gentle on-ramp.
  • Storyline 360 is the deep dive. It's a Windows desktop app built around slides and a timeline, where you design custom interactions with pinpoint control. Its power comes from three ideas — states, triggers, and variables — the heart of this course.
  • The rest of the suite supports both. Review 360 (feedback), Content Library 360 (templates, characters, images), Reach 360 (a simple LMS), and an AI Assistant round it out. You publish to an LMS with SCORM/xAPI, or straight to the web.

💳 Honest From the Start: The Subscription Reality

Here's a promise this course keeps in every lesson: we'll never pretend something is free when it isn't. Unlike many apps we cover, Articulate 360 has no permanent free tier. It's a paid annual subscription. The good news for learners: there's a genuinely useful 30-day free trial with the full suite, and every skill in this course can be learned during that trial.

Because plans, prices, and limits change often and differ by region, we won't quote dollar figures that go stale — we'll point you to articulate.com/pricing instead. What stays true is the shape of it, which we label with badges throughout:

  • Trial / Paid — the whole suite. You need an active trial or subscription to author. (Learners you publish to don't need a subscription.)
  • Teams — features that live on the team/organization plan, like shared team folders and some collaboration controls.
  • Add-on — things billed separately or metered, like heavy AI Assistant use and aspects of Reach 360.
  • Windows only — Storyline 360 is a Windows desktop app. On a Mac you'll run it in a virtual machine (we cover how in Lesson 2). Rise 360 is browser-based and works anywhere.

📚 About This Course

This is a complete, beginner-friendly course built in four parts that follow a deliberate arc — from orientation, to a quick real win, to real depth, to shipping.

Part 1 — Foundations orients you: what the suite is, the honest subscription story, getting the trial installed, choosing the right tool for a given project, and thinking like a course designer before you build anything.

Part 2 — Build Fast with Rise 360 gets you an early win. In a handful of lessons you'll assemble a real, responsive, publishable course out of blocks and built-in interactions. Many projects never need more than Rise — and you'll know how to make them shine.

Part 3 — Go Deep with Storyline 360 is the heart of the course. You'll learn the interface and timeline, then the three pillars of custom interactivity — states, triggers, and variables — and put them together with layers, buttons, media, and characters.

Part 4 — Assess, Publish & Ship is the production craft that applies to both tools: quizzing, accessibility as a first-class concern, publishing to an LMS with SCORM/xAPI, collaboration and review workflows, the AI Assistant (honestly), and a two-part capstone where you plan, build, and publish a real course.

Everything is taught with original, trademark-free mock-ups of the interface (not real screenshots), so it stays clear even as Articulate's design evolves. Menu paths are described in plain language, and where Articulate frequently changes something, we say so.

What You'll Be Able to Do

  • Explain what each app in the Articulate 360 suite is for — and choose Rise vs. Storyline confidently
  • Set up the free trial and install both tools (including Storyline on a Mac)
  • Build a complete, responsive course in Rise 360 with blocks, interactions, and quizzes
  • Navigate Storyline 360 — scenes, slides, the timeline, and panels — without feeling lost
  • Build custom interactions with states, triggers, and variables — the real engine of Storyline
  • Add audio, video, software simulations, and characters that actually help learning
  • Write good assessments — question types, question banks, and results that track
  • Make courses accessible: WCAG, alt text, focus order, and closed captions
  • Publish and track on an LMS (SCORM/xAPI/AICC/cmi5), the web, Review 360, or Reach 360
  • Run a review-and-collaboration workflow, and use the AI Assistant where it genuinely helps

Who This Course Is For

  • Instructional designers & L&D professionals moving into (or leveling up in) Articulate
  • Trainers, teachers, and educators who need to build real interactive lessons
  • Subject-matter experts asked to "turn this into an online course"
  • Complete beginners who've never opened an authoring tool and want a clear path

🚀 How to Get the Most Out of This Course

You'll learn faster and remember more if you treat this as hands-on, not a read-through:

  • Start your free trial when you reach Part 2 — not before. Part 1 needs no software. Starting the 30-day clock right as you begin building in Rise means the whole hands-on stretch fits inside the trial. (Lesson 2 explains the timing.)
  • Build a real project alongside the lessons. Every lesson has a "🎯 Try It" activity. Pick one small topic you know — a process, a policy, a how-to — and build it out as you go. By the capstone you'll have a finished course, not just notes.
  • Do Rise before Storyline. Rise gives you a publishable course fast, which builds momentum for Storyline's steeper (and very rewarding) climb. Resist the urge to jump straight to triggers.
  • Keep a Learning Journal. Each lesson ends with a reflection prompt. A few lines after each one turns "I saw that" into "I can do that."
  • Trust the badges. When you see Teams, Add-on, or Windows only, that's us flagging a caveat so nothing surprises you later.

🧠 A Growth Mindset for This Course

Storyline's triggers and variables can feel like programming at first, and that can be intimidating if you've never coded. Here's the truth: it's logic, not code, and it's completely learnable one small piece at a time. Nobody is "not technical enough" for Articulate — they just haven't learned it yet. Every expert author started with a single trigger that didn't work, fixed it, and kept going.

📖 The Course: Four Parts, 24 Lessons

🧭 Part 1 — Foundations & Setup

Orient yourself, get set up honestly, and learn to choose the right tool before you build.

⚡ Part 2 — Build Fast with Rise 360

The gentle on-ramp. Assemble a real, responsive, publishable course out of blocks and interactions.

🎓 Checkpoint — You've Built a Real Course

That's a complete, responsive, publishable course under your belt — many real-world projects never need more than this. Ready to go beyond templates and build interactions from scratch? Part 3 opens the hood on Storyline 360.

🛠️ Part 3 — Go Deep with Storyline 360

The heart of the course: the interface, the timeline, and the three pillars of custom interactivity.

The Interface & the Timeline

Find your way around Storyline and learn how objects live in time.

🚀 Part 4 — Assess, Publish & Ship

The production craft that applies to both tools — then plan, build, and publish a real course.

✅ Prerequisites

Less than you'd think. To follow along you need:

  • Comfort using a computer and a web browser — no coding, no design degree required
  • For Rise 360: any computer (Windows, Mac, Linux) or even a tablet — it's browser-based
  • For Storyline 360: a Windows PC, or a Mac running Windows in a virtual machine (covered in Lesson 2) Windows only
  • An Articulate 360 account — the 30-day free trial is all you need for the whole course Trial / Paid
  • A topic you'd like to build a short course about — bring your own, or use ours

💡 Don't start the trial yet

Part 1 is all concepts and planning — no software needed. Wait to start your free trial until you reach Part 2 (Lesson 5), so the 30-day clock covers the whole hands-on stretch. You can read every lesson without an account; you'll just want the trial active when you start building.
