π Lesson 1: What Articulate 360 Is (and Isn't)
Before you install a thing or click a single button, let's build the right mental picture: what Articulate 360 actually is, what each app in the suite is for, why it has two authoring tools, and an honest, badge-by-badge look at the money. Get this foundation right and every later lesson clicks into place.
π What You'll Learn
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Explain in one sentence what Articulate 360 is and who it's for
- Name the main apps in the suite and say what each one does
- Describe why there are two authoring tools β Rise 360 and Storyline 360
- Read an honest map of the subscription: what's Trial / Paid, Teams, Add-on, or Windows only
β±οΈ Estimated Time: 35 minutes
π― Project: Write a one-sentence definition in your own words and decide what you want to build with Articulate β the seed of your Learning Journal. No software needed today.
In This Lesson
What Is Articulate 360, Really?
Articulate 360 is a subscription toolkit for building e-learning β the interactive online courses people take for onboarding, compliance, software training, and school. That's the whole thing in one sentence. If you've ever clicked through a workplace training module, dragged answers into boxes on a quiz, or watched a "click each part of the diagram" interaction, you've used the kind of content Articulate makes.
It's the market leader in its field, which matters for a practical reason: "Articulate" and "Storyline" show up constantly in instructional-design and L&D job listings. Learning this suite is a genuine, portable career skill. Organizations of every size β corporations, universities, hospitals, government, non-profits β use it to turn knowledge into courses that people can take anywhere, any time, and that report back who completed what.
π§ Mindset
Articulate can look like a lot at first β two big apps, a fistful of supporting tools, and a wall of panels in Storyline. That reaction is normal, and it fades fast. You don't need to understand everything today; you need one clear picture to hang the rest on. Nobody is "not technical enough" for this β they just haven't learned it yet.
One clarification up front, because it trips people up: Articulate 360 is the authoring toolkit, not the place learners take courses. You build a course in Articulate, then you publish it and put it somewhere learners can reach it β usually a Learning Management System (LMS), a website, or Articulate's own Reach 360. We'll cover exactly how in Part 4.
A Tour of the Suite
"Articulate 360" is a bundle. A subscription unlocks several apps that work together. Here's the whole family and how the pieces relate:

Figure 1 β The Articulate 360 suite: two authoring tools plus a set of supporting apps.
Here's what each one is for:
π The Suite, App by App
Storyline 360 Windows only β the flagship authoring tool. Slide-based, like a supercharged PowerPoint, with a timeline and deep control. This is where you build custom interactions, simulations, and branching. The bulk of this course (Part 3) lives here.
Rise 360 β the browser-based authoring tool. You build responsive courses from ready-made blocks; it's fast and looks polished with little effort. Part 2 is all Rise.
Review 360 β publish a course to a private web link so reviewers can leave comments right on the slide. It replaces the "email me your feedback in a spreadsheet" nightmare.
Content Library 360 β a huge library of templates, cut-out and illustrated characters, icons, photos, and videos you can drop into either tool.
Reach 360 Add-on β Articulate's own lightweight LMS: a place to deliver courses to learners and track completion, if you don't already have an LMS. (Seat-based; often billed separately from authoring.)
AI Assistant Add-on β built-in AI helpers that draft text, generate quiz questions, summarize, and more. Genuinely useful; usage is metered, so we cover it honestly in Lesson 22.
π‘ A nod to Studio 360: You may see an older tool called Studio 360 (Presenter, Quizmaker, Engage β PowerPoint add-ins). It still exists and ships with the suite, but it's legacy; almost all new development happens in Storyline and Rise. This course focuses on those two, and you can safely ignore Studio unless you inherit an old Studio project.
Why Two Authoring Tools?
The most common beginner question is: "If both make courses, which do I use?" The short answer is that they solve the problem from opposite ends, and knowing which to reach for is a real skill (we devote all of Lesson 3 to it). Here's the essence.
Rise 360 builds from blocks. You stack pre-made pieces β a text block, an image, an accordion, a quiz β and Rise makes it responsive automatically. It's fast and hard to make ugly:
Figure 2 β Rise (a simplified mock-up, not a real screenshot): content is a stack of blocks that flow responsively.
Storyline 360 builds on a canvas. You place objects on a slide, position them in time on a timeline, and wire up behavior with triggers. Total control, more effort:
when user clicks Start
when timeline starts
Figure 3 β Storyline (a simplified mock-up, not a real screenshot): objects on a stage, a triggers panel, and a timeline that controls when things appear.
β The One-Line Rule of Thumb
Reach for Rise when you want a good course fast and it's mostly content. Reach for Storyline when you need a custom interaction Rise can't make. Lesson 3 turns this instinct into a reliable decision.
The Honest Subscription Reality
This course makes you one promise: we'll never tell you something is free when it isn't, or nudge you toward spending you don't need to. So let's be crystal clear. Articulate 360 has no permanent free tier β it's a paid annual subscription. But there's a full-featured 30-day free trial, and everything in this course fits inside it.
| What you want to do | What it needs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Learn and practice everything in this course | Trial / Paid | The 30-day trial includes the full suite. Plenty for this course. |
| Author in Rise 360 (any computer or tablet) | Trial / Paid | Browser-based; works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook. |
| Author in Storyline 360 | Trial / Paid Windows only | Windows desktop app. On a Mac, run it in a Windows VM (Lesson 2). |
| Have learners take a course you published | Free for the learner | Learners never need an Articulate subscription β they just open the link or LMS. |
| Shared team folders & some collaboration controls | Teams | Live on the team/organization plan, not solo plans. |
| Heavy AI Assistant use, or deliver via Reach 360 | Add-on | Metered or seat-based; often billed on top of authoring. |
β οΈ Why we don't quote prices
Articulate changes plans, prices, tiers, and exact limits regularly, and they differ by region and
over time. Any number printed here would go stale fast. When it matters, we'll send you to Articulate's
current page (articulate.com/pricing) instead of guessing. The shape above β paid
suite, generous trial, a few Teams-only and add-on pieces, Storyline on Windows β is what stays true.
The takeaway is simple: you can complete this entire course, and build a real published course, on the free trial alone β as long as you time it well, which is exactly what Lesson 2 sets up.
π― Try It: Name Your "Why"
ποΈ Activity: One page, five minutes (no software)
Objective: Turn today's mental model into something personal, so the rest of the course has a real project to hang on.
Steps
- In your own words, finish this sentence: "Articulate 360 is ______." (β±οΈ 1 min)
- From memory β no peeking at Figure 1 β list the two authoring tools and one supporting app, and say what each does. (β±οΈ 2 min)

- Your progress and how you feel about learning this
βοΈ This lesson's prompt: Why do you want to learn Articulate, and what one course do you hope to have built by the end? Write a few honest sentences and name your topic β you'll build it for real at the capstone, and you'll enjoy looking back on this entry.
π Lesson Summary
π Key Takeaways
- Articulate 360 is a subscription toolkit for building e-learning β a portable, in-demand career skill.
- The suite = two authoring tools (Storyline, Rise) plus supporting apps (Review 360, Content Library 360, Reach 360, AI Assistant); Studio 360 is legacy.
- Rise is fast/responsive/block-based; Storyline is deep/custom/slide-and-timeline-based. Choosing between them is a real skill (Lesson 3).
- There's no permanent free tier, but a full 30-day trial covers this whole course. Storyline is Windows-only; learners never need a subscription.
π What You've Accomplished
You came in maybe unsure what "Articulate" even meant. You leave with a one-sentence definition, a map of the whole suite, a clear sense of why there are two tools, and an honest picture of the money. That's the foundation the entire course builds on β nicely done.
β Common Questions at This Stage
Do I need to buy anything before I start?
No. Part 1 is all concepts and planning β no software needed. You'll start the free 30-day trial when you reach Part 2 (Lesson 5), so the clock covers the whole hands-on stretch. Lesson 2 walks through it.
I'm on a Mac. Can I still take this course?
Absolutely. Rise 360 runs in any browser, so all of Part 2 works natively on a Mac. Storyline 360 is a Windows app, so for Part 3 you'll run Windows in a virtual machine β a common, well-documented setup we cover step by step in Lesson 2.
Is this the same as Adobe Captivate or PowerPoint?
It's the same category as Captivate (both are e-learning authoring tools and direct competitors). Storyline feels a lot like a powered-up PowerPoint β slides, a timeline, animations β but it adds real interactivity and LMS publishing that PowerPoint can't do.
π Looking Ahead
In Lesson 2, you'll set up your Articulate account, start the free trial at the right moment, and install both tools β including how to run Storyline on a Mac.
